Sui Staking Rewards Explained
When you stake SUI tokens, you earn rewards from the network for helping secure it. Understanding how these rewards work helps you make better staking decisions and maximize your returns.
How Rewards are Calculated
Sui distributes a fixed pool of rewards each epoch to all validators proportional to their stake. Each validator then distributes their share to delegators after taking their commission.
The formula for your rewards per epoch is roughly:
What is APY?
APY (Annual Percentage Yield) is the annualized return on your staked SUI, including compounding. On Sui, APY typically ranges from 1.5% to 3%.
APY varies between validators because of different commission rates and voting power. A validator with 0% commission passes all rewards to stakers, resulting in higher APY than one with 10% commission.
Epoch-based Distribution
Rewards on Sui follow a predictable cycle:
- Stake — your delegation is recorded but not yet active
- Activation — your stake becomes active at the start of the next epoch (~24h)
- Earning — rewards accrue every epoch based on your active stake
- Compounding — rewards are automatically added to your staked balance, earning more rewards the next epoch
Claiming vs Compounding
On Sui, rewards compound automatically — they're added to your staked balance each epoch. You don't need to manually claim and restake. However, if you want to withdraw just the rewards while keeping your principal staked, you can use the Claim Rewards feature on app.suistaking.io, which:
- Unstakes your full position (principal + rewards)
- Re-stakes the original principal amount
- Leaves the reward amount in your wallet
This is done in a single atomic transaction.
Maximizing Your Returns
- Choose low-commission validators — even 1% commission difference compounds over time
- Stake early — rewards start the epoch after you stake, so earlier means more epochs earning
- Let rewards compound — don't claim frequently, let auto-compounding work for you
- Use the simulator to project returns at app.suistaking.io/simulate
- Diversify across 2-3 validators to balance risk and reward
